Ultradispersed (Co)Mo catalysts with high hydrodesulfurization activity

In spite of the huge worldwide interest for single-atom and ultradispersed catalysts, metal atoms coordinated with sulfur are rarely addressed. this work, molybdenum-based catalysts were obtained by adsorption three thiomolybdates different nuclearity (n = 1, 2, 3) on high-surface-area S-doped carbon, followed sulfidation in H2S/H2 flow at 350 °C. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) attest that single few-atom clusters predominant surface materials after adsorption, as well thiophene HDS reaction. Independently nature thiomolybdate precursor, leads to specific activity exceeding a conventional supported MoS2 reference. Ultradispersed further promoted cobalt, yielding turnover frequencies 2–3 times higher than those reported benchmark CoMoS catalysts.
